Castle hill

I’m trying to decide on doing the castle hill walk plus st Mathias and the bunker museum. The guidebook says things are crowded in the mornings but is that true in November? I’ll be there on Nov 30.

I am currently in Budapest. On Wednesday morning we went to the Fisherman’s Bastion. There were a fair amount of people there, but not overly crowded. St. Matthias is right there and I didn’t see crowds hanging around outside or at the location where tickets are purchased. We did not go in. At the Hospital in the Rock Bunker Museum it was not crowded. Be aware that you can only go through on a guided tour that begins hourly. After the effort to get up there we arrived just after noon. We decided that we didn’t want to hang out there for an hour before we could do the tour, so we left. Maybe we will go back if we have time now that we know the timing of things. I imagine that at all of these locations things would be more crowded on the weekends.

Andrea is correct and she has been there more recently than I have.

The area around the Fishermans Bastion and Matthias Church is large enough to take quite a few tourists. The walk to the Castle and even to the Hospital in the Rock can get a bit crowded because of the construction that is ongoing on the hill. I found the Hospital in the Rock rather interesting. My last visit was about a year ago. The history museum in the Castle is also one of my favorites in town.

If you have a few days in Budapest the Castle Hill isint someting I would miss.

To get up there take the funicular. Yes, its stupid expensive but stand in the front of the car and the view is pretty sweet. On a budget, near and to the right of the bottom funicular station is the stop for Bus 16. Bus 16 will take you to the Fisherman's Bastion and is free thanks to that TravelCard you purchased for the duration of your stay (or didnt buy because your are 65 or older making public transportatin free for you).

To come back down, you walk past the front of the Castle to this point https://maps.app.goo.gl/7CL3FWP1zLmiL25V8 Here you will find an escalator and steps going down. At the bottom of the ecalator (or steps) go to the right and follow the walks through the courtyards and down to the street. Sorry, no one has mapped this and googlemaps gets it wrong too. You will reach the street about here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/3DZv6MLhbN4N7CQf9 Then the 19/41 tram stop is here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/JLb6HRx65t5tYcR46 The 19/41 crosses the 47/49 in one direction and the 4/6 in the other direction. Both will take you across the river to Pest.
