Lucky me! Budapest will have the Wine Fest during my short visit. I'll need to tailor my itinerary to fit one late afternoon/evening at the festival.
Has anyone been to the wine festival in the last couple of years, and how was it?
Can I wait to buy tickets closer to the date to see how weather will be?
And, which wines should I not miss? I love Tokaj (the sweet dessert wine from that region) but I am not familiar with other producers in the region.
I go almost every year. The best night is Wednesday or Thursday as it isnt as crowded. I have a wine guide/friend that I will probably go with on Wednesday. Its nice to have someone that knows about the vineyards and the wines .... and speaks Hungarian (not essential).
But any night is good. They discount the tickets when bought in advance, so buy them when they go on sale.
Which wine is good? Well all of them. https://aborfesztival.hu/en
For the weather, well anything can happen, but September is a beautiful time here. Here is 11 September: https://weatherspark.com/d/84771/9/11/Average-Weather-on-September-11-in-Budapest-Hungary#Figures-Temperature 56F to 72F averages, 50/50% chance of clear skies. One of the dryer months in town too.
I am traveling alone and used to it but agree might be fun with a friend. I do love wine and I’ve taken a few courses in the field that cover other wine regions. Love Tokaj! But that is as much as I know about Hungarian wines.
Also looking forward to exploring the castle grounds where event takes place and the views from up there in the evening.
I arrive on Wednesday early afternoon so Thursday may be safer option.
The other event to keep an eye on is the Jewish Festival. The 2026 dates are not out yet, but if its the same week as 2025 it will start on Sunday 6 September and run thruough Thursday 17 September. https://www.zsidokulturalisfesztival.hu/
Joy, I just sent you a PM with an idea.
My plans for September are in flux so .... I have known the young lady for maybe 8 or 9 years. Very personable ... she can put up with me so ....
Ive also noticed a few other RS types speaking of September.
In the past I have bought tickets at the door, but I cant guarantee that. Advance tickets are under $20. They go on sale in July.
I think we have a few more that are going to be in Budapest during the wine festival than the current posts indicate. If any of you want to really get the most out of the evening I do know a translator who speaks English, French, Hungarian and most importantly Hungarian Wine who I know from personal experience (I have hired her in the past) will take a 7.5 evening and turn it into at least a 9 if you have a true interest in the subject.
If not for the festival, she does estate tours outside of Budapest as well.
