budapest transportation on tour

im going on the central europe trip coming up end of august and im curious if people bought a bus/metro pass when they went to budapest. it seems like many sites are quite far away, just wondering if the transport was good to save some time and see more things.
thanks!

Megan, are you on a Budapest group tour? Or just traveling there independently?

If you are doing the Rick Steves tour, they cover the transportation costs for the group activities. I don't recall if they gave us a pass or if it was individual tickets (it has been a few years since I took the tour). I'd wait until you have your introduction meeting on tour and ask the guide what you might need to purchase for your free time activities.

If the guide doesn't provide a transit pass for the time you're in Budapest it would certainly be worthwhile for getting around during your free time, and a pass is easier than dealing with individual tickets. You can download the BudapestGO app before your visit - it's also helpful with journey planning. And of course if you're at least 65, transit is free - just be prepared to show an ID verifying your age.

What Markcw said. And don't think of the public transportation as a way to get from one good thing to another good thing. All the stuff in-between is good too. With a pass you can hop on and off at will to explore. It's the only way to go.

We took that tour in 2023 and were given a transit pass for our time in Budapest by the guide (3 day I think). We also did a good amount of walking, but the pass covered the longer distances. It was unlimited, so we were able to use it for group activities as well as our independent exploration.
It was a great tour, hope you enjoy!

Edited to say 2023.
