Budapest to Vienna

Hi, I'm trying to get info about the best way to buy tickets from Budapest to Vienna for Aug 2017. I tried reading through some older threads and am still a bit confused.

Is it best to buy online well in advance or can I buy the tickets once in Budapest? And if so, which Ticket Office or website is recommended? TIA!

The cheap Sparpreis tickets must be bought in advance, either with the Hungarian or the Austrian railways. You can buy your tickets when in Budapest, but that will be at full fare. The Man in Seat 61, the authority on European railway travel, explains the possibilities at this page.

Of course, when you get to Budapest and realize you hadn't planned enough time there, if you have pre-purchased tickets you are just out of luck. Those pre-purchased tickets will be for a particular day and a particular train. If you spend another 15-20 euro and purchase the tickets in Budapest you can have flexibility of day and time.

Don't worry if its a RailJet Train or not. The RailJets are newer and fancier equipment but not always the fastest train. Just find one that fits your schedule.
