Any one have any experience with what might be the most efficient and economical way to get from Budapest to Bilboa or there abouts?

Any suggestions on airlines? Is it easier to fly out of Vienna?

Use Skyscanner. Try from Budapest to Spain. Then Vienna to Spain. There are some flights to Bilboa with one stop in Lisboa or Brussels. But they take quite long. Play with it. Try all flights, then nonstop flights, roundtrip (sometimes roundtrip is cheaper than one way). Based on price and the length of flight you can decide. Sometimes it would be to your advantage to fly to Madrid and then by train.

Thanks for the info. It looks like flying to Madrid or Barcelona then on to the north makes the most sense. Thought I might go Barcelona as I already have four days allotted for Madrid after San Sebastián/Bilboa and only a day and a half for Barcelona at the end of the trip. If I can get into Barcelona early enough that gives me almost a whole extra day there, but I might need to fly to the north to get there in time the next day. Any reviews of regional Spanish airlines?

A little bit off topic here, but is it normal to have trouble finishing a booking on Ryan Air site. I found the flight from Budapest to Barcelona that I want, but the booking doesn't appear to go through in the end. I either have no tickets or several:) very frustrating.

FYI, I did eventually get through on RyanAir website and booked a direct flight from Budapest to Barcelona. Ended up being about $140 Canadian with one checked bag. The RyanAir experience awaits me:) Yikes! I have no idea why the booking finally went through after so many attempts. I did check with my credit card company and they had not flagged anything, so who knows. Maybe it was RyanAir's doing as the price went up about ten bucks in the interim.
