Budapest to Eger train: do I need advance reservations?

I am looking at the logistics to take a day trip from Budapest to Eger by train (sometime week of May 12 if that matters). I see there are frequent trains, every hour each way, and the journey takes just under 2 hours. Do I need to purchase tickets in advance, or is it possible to just purchase the day (or two) before and still get tickets? Additionally, is there any concern regarding getting a ticket back to Budapest - meaning initially buy just a one-way ticket to Eger, not knowing how long we'd want to stay? When we are winding down from the day, then be able to purchase a ticket for the next hourly train back to Budapest?

We'd prefer to remain flexible on which day we want to take as our side trip to Eger.
Thanks in advance

For getting your ticket, use this site. https://jegy.mav.hu/ Better yet, download the app on your phone. You can also buy tickets at the vending machines at the stations.

The only down side to last minute shopping is there will be fewer seats to choose from on trains where you can purchase a seat ... yes, pay for a reserved seat if the system will let you ... so much easier.

And don't forget if you are 65. It's just the cost of the seat reservation.

I would like to self-correct myself.

There are no reserved seats on the trip to Eger. Its open seating. Very common unless the train is crossing a border.

The ticket will cost you something less than $8 no matter when you buy it. And, again, free if you are over 65.

The only risk you run is the train selling out and I have never heard of that happening, but I dont sit around talking train all day. But if you miss one, take the next.
