Budapest - Szentendre, Visegrád?

Hi All,

Late September in Budapest. Meeting two other couples prior to river cruise.

We'll be wandering around a bit, taking trams for exploring, etc.

Have resv for a dinner cruise, and a local cooking class on one day.

One day we set aside to go to Szentendre - and perhaps Visegrád. Looks like our transportation/touring options are:
1. Metro on the Pest side of the Danube and cross over a bit north - couple of metro station changes
2. Walk or taxi to Buda side, grab the train and go north to Szentendre
3. Buy a package tour (touristy!), get picked up close to our hotel, hit both places, and return six hours later

Given our short time, the cost of the tour would seem a reasonable expense to see more, have a guide, have lunch, etc ...

Anyone done this with a tour guide - or if metro/trained - how did it work out? Always looking for suggestions!

Thanks!

Option 1 combined with 2.

Just navigate to Batthyany ter station via Metro or tram and get on the H5 train. Should take less than an hour. Free if you're 65+. Watch a couple of YouTube videos covering Szentendre.

Mr. E may chime in with more suggestions.

If you want to see Szentendre, then take the H5 train. If you want Szentendre and Visegrad, hire a guide with a car. Yes, I've done it, but its been a lot of years and cant recommend anyone, sorry. If you have 3 full days or less in Budapest, maybe do Szentendre but thats a toss up. Budapest alone can eat up 4 days.

Good stuff - All and special thanks as usual to Mr E!

Have downloaded the metro map - looks pretty easy from our hotel ... walk to Deák Ferenc tér, M2 across to Buda to Batthyány tér, then H5 (HÉV) to Szentendre.

Some folks say both M2 and H5 are free to the more mature among us ... some say an add on is needed for the H5?

A boat back sounds fun and about the same time as the H5 back to M2 to walk to hotel ... boat usually docks near the bridge? How do you tell the "city boat" from the for hire boat?
