Budapest Itinerary advice please

Hi! My husband surprised me a Danube River cruise for us in November 2025! This will be our first time in Budapest. We will have two nights in Budapest before our cruise begins. We have a hotel reserved in the 7th district. What do you think of this plan? We are young and like to walk. I think the only advance tickets we need to reserve are for the Parliament?

Day 1
Arrive midafternoon from Midwest US.
Taxi to hotel
Walk to Hero’s square.
See Vajdahunyad Castle

Day 2
Hungarian Parliament - will reserve tickets for that morning.
See the shoes on the Danube
Great Market
Holocaust Memorial Center
Synagogue
House of Terror
River Cruise- Will decide which one and buy advance tickets

Day 3
Basilica
Check out of hotel
Take luggage to ship
See The state opera house- I’m not sure about only looking inside, doing a tour or buying tickets for an opera.

Day 4
We will have a bus and walking tour of the Buda side in the morning. I think the ship will leave this afternoon.

Everything besides day 4 can be flexible. We haven’t bought any tickets yet. We have our flights and hotel.

That sounds like a plan. The only thing I would caution is the day of the week for your plans as some things are closed on some days of the week, and where in District VII the hotel is located in.

Thank you! I will double check the days of the week for any closures.
The hotel is Medosz Hotel Budapest.

The Medosz Hotel is in District VI, not VII and is in a very good location. Well done.

Your Day 2 plan would be too much for me in one day. I would consider moving at least 1-2 things from that day to free up some time for exploring and having a nice lunch somewhere.

I'd also suggest adding a visit to a thermal bath while there!

Re the state Opera House: Go to a performance like we did! One of the highlights of our visit. I see on their website that Romeo and Juliet is on schedule for November. If you can make the dates work, I highly recommend. Keep in mind that you want the Opera House (there are 2 venues on the ticket purchase page). We were able to get first row balcony tickets for $30 US each in advance online. The lyrics were cast above the stage in Hungarian and English, so we could follow the story. We had a marvelous time (dressed up a bit) and went for a late dinner afterwards at a nearby cafe. Better than the tour in my humble opinion.
PS If you by chance are taking an AMA waterways cruise and offered a $100 pp Vienna performance, skip that and attend the Budapest Opera performance. Enjoy!

Check with your river cruise itinerary, ours did a night cruise in Budapest specifically to see the buildings lighted. This would make a separate evening cruise redundant and open two evening opera options. Consider a visit to the baths with a quick back massage. One of my favorite memories. Also check where the cruise tour of the city goes to prevent overlapping sites with your days in the city. We’ve enjoyed our 3 visits seeing different places in this great second tier city of Europe. Review MR E’s recommendations on seeing the city and RS book.

Day 2.

Take the 4/6 Tram to the 2 Tram to the Hungarian Parliament. Or maybe walk from the 4/6 Tram and visit the antique shops on Falk Miska utca along the way. See the Shoes on the Danube then the 2/2B/23 Tram to the Corso for lunch. Then the 2/2B/23 Tram to the Great Market Hall.

Then 47/49 Tram to the Great Synagogue and do the tour. Then the 47/49 Tram to the M1 metro (or walk) up to the House of Terror not far from your hotel.

I think for such a short stay a bath house takes too much time .... BUT, if you did want to, then do it day 1 after Heroes Square. You will be very close to the Széchenyi Barh House.

The Opera for a performance, again, you only have 2 days in a 4 day city. Maybe not time well spent i think. You might be able to work in the Opera House tour instead of the Bath House on Day 1.

Naturally you have to buy a 72 hour Travel Card https://bkk.hu/en/tickets-and-passes/prices/72-hour-budapest-travelcard/

Thank you, Mr. E -I wasn't sure how the districts were divided. I think I can tell now. I'm happy with the location.

PQ- Thank you, yes, I will move something, maybe to Saturday morning? I will ask my husband about the thermal bath! Do you pack flip flops then borrow towels? I can see that we could defiantly fill more days than we have!

Joan-Thank you for your idea about the opera. We will miss Romeo and Juliet with the few dates we are in Budapest. Lohengrin will be there, it's 4 hours and 45 minutes in the evening. There is also The Little Sweep, which I'm wondering if it's for children? It's 90 minutes. I'm wondering if we would enjoy that? We could definitely fit that in on day 3.

Jojo biker-I just checked with Viking, the ship actually leaves on our day 4 in the morning, so we will plan on booking an evening cruise. Yes, I just bought the RS Central Europe last week. I will keep studying it and this forum.

Mr. E-thank you also for the day 2 itinerary. That looks great!

Yes, I'm not sure about the baths. I wasn't sure how many days to be in Budapest before the cruise. I enjoy having a long time to plan but I'm very excited about the few days we have. We will need to decide about the opera as well. Would you recommend skipping the Holocaust Memorial center with the short time we have?

With a tight day it seemed getting to it and spending enough time to do it justice might be difficult. But its very well done. I'll send you a PM with some related ideas.

A hint on the districts. Zip 1061 is District VI, 1075 is district VII, 1124 is district XII. Andrassy is VI, the river front area of Pest is V, and the historic Jewish district is VII

The Day 2 plan depends on what time your Parliament tour is. In November it appears tge earliest is at 10am. But I just looked and a few November dates are SOLD OUT. BUY YOUR TICKET TODAY.

Let me know what you get and the day of the week. You have time to see a lot that day and enjoy the city as a whole if you plan the route.
Lunch could change depending on the parliament time and you might be able to work in the Opera tour or possibly the Holocaust Memorial. But that Day 2 i came up with does not work on a Saturday.

If I were skipping something on Day 2, it would be the Holocaust Memorial Centre, yes. We went, and while it is informative, it is a bit out of the way and wasn't as memorable as the Dohany St Synagogue tour.

We went to the Szechenyi Thermal Baths one morning and it was absolutely without a doubt one of our favorite parts of the trip! We brought cheap flip flops and towels from the hotel, then a large ziploc to store the damp items in our bag. It was definitely worth the time.

Thank you for the advice, I really appreciate it!

We bought our tickets to the Parliament, 10a.m. on a Thursday so that day should work out!

I did take the Holocaust Memorial center off.

I think my husband would like the thermal bath house. We may be able to fit that in our first evening.

I’m also debating about the opera. I think the children’s one on Saturday at 11-12:30 would be a good fit for us?

Szechenyi bath is at the end of the street your hotel is on, but you will maybe want to use the M1 metro for part of the way there or back (it runs under the street). Figure 2 hours minimum there. Then Cork Breakfast & Wine or N28 for dinner. Enjoy the lights on Andrassy ut. If you have more energy, take the M1 to the river before bedtime. Stunning views.

The children show at the Opera? Sure, why not, if you think you will enjoy it.
