Hi all, planning a trip with my young adult children for early to mid March 2027 and one option is Budapest. We might do a day trip to Eger or overnight in Bratislava. But now that I am reading about weather, I am concerned that it will be too cold/rainy to walk around and enjoy the city. Thoughts about a March trip? Or other Eastern Europe ideas for March? Thank you!
Wet? Who told you that? March it pretty much the driest month of the year. And March has the most beautiful skies. The cool dense air and the very low humidity combine to make the most vivid blue skies imaginable. The city is alive, but you gotta be good with the temperatures.
January, February, March, April July, August September October all average 6 days or rain each. May averages 9 days or rain, June November and December average 7 days or rain.
So, in the number of days of rain, it’s in the 8-way tie for fewest days with rain. When looking at quantity of rain, March gets 1.2 inches on average which is the least of any month in the year and less than half of the wettest month.
Cold? Well, that’s a bit more subjective. I would plan on days with highs between 60F and 70F and lows between 40F and 45F after sunrise.
The published average for the month is a high of 52F, and the average low is 36F. But the world is getting warmer. The highest recorded temperature in the first two weeks of March in 2026 was 60F, in 2025 it was 71F, in 2024 it was 63F and in 2023 it was 67F.
Bratislava? Okay, so you can say you went to Slovakia. Resist the urge. The place is “okay” but given time there or in Budapest or in Vienna; spend it in Vienna or Budapest.
Eger? Yes, you can do a day trip, but don’t. Use that Bratislava day to spend the night in Eger. Do a wine tour, see the countryside. Stay at the Senator Haz. Remember if you are 65 or over the train is free.
Other ideas?
Depends on how much time you have. Budapest is a city break, so 3 to 7 full days in the city doing something new each day.
Romania is nice in March. A bit cooler because of altitude, but dress for it and its fine. Ive been there twice in March. But Romania is a traveling holiday. Two days here and two days there for what ever amount of time you have.
Croatia, Slovenia. March is a silly time to go. You miss all of what makes them special. Now, late May to early July, great.
Bosnia & Herzegovina. Sarajevo is technically not bad in March, but its only about a 4 night trip in my world. The rest of the country, rather cool because of altitude.
Czech Republic, sure. But colder, but still nice. I guess my concern would be how much time. I burn out on Prague after 3 full days. Then have to hit the road and it becomes more like the Romania trip.
Austria yes, but colder outside of Vienna which is pretty much the same temps as Budapest, but a few more day of rain and another half inch or so. Vienna can hold the attention of many for many days. Then there are good road trips. Also not "Eastern Europe".
Bulgaria and Albania maybe so, but I would save both for warmer weather.
Ukraine absolutely. Lviv or Kyiv or maybe just a short hop to Uzhhorod on the Hungarian/Slovak border. ++++
I have been every place I listed above, most several times so not much guess work.
Thank you!! These are so helpful! Who told me it was rainy? Probably google/AI. I appreciate your quick response. I also appreciate the suggestions for alternates or day trips. I think we will stick with our original plan which was to stay in Budapest and maybe do a day/overnight in Eger. Thank you again!
