We’re going on a Christmas Market river cruise next year. We start in Budapest. I’m looking for a Rick Steves type of boutique hotel, breakfast included, in a location close to the markets. This will be our first time there. I want a ”European” feel hotel. Not one like a Marriott where you could be in any city in the US. Thanks much!
I've no clue as to where the Xmas markets are but highly recommend this hotel https://www.gerloczy.com/ - their restraunt downstairs is fantastic too for more than breakfast. Its central very close to one oof the main bus terminals and under 10min walk to the Danube. Budapest is pretty compact and has a very good transport system
I’m looking for a Rick Steves type of boutique hotel,
In Budapest RS uses 4 and 5 star tourist and business hotels. At least all the hotels I have been able to identify that he has used fit that bill.
The Christmas Markets are primarily near the river at Vorosmarty ter and in front of the Basilica. Both in District V. The Marriott here in town and the Intercontinental Hotel are on the River and every room faces the river. The view is one of the most beautiful in all of Europe. Guaranteed. Other than the Marriott and the Intercontinental I dont recommend staying in District V as its sort of tourist hell. But those two have the views and that makes it worth it. ANd they are well suited for short stays.
Both markets are very easy to reach on the M1 Metro so the key is staying along the M1 line. That means Andrassy ut. It is often said the Paris modeled the champs de elysee after Andrassy ut but failed to do as good a job.
Look at these hotels
- Hotel Moments
- Callas House
- Mamaison Hotel Andrássy
- Hotel Oktogon Haggenmacher
- K+K Opera
- Hotel Astoria (another exception to the District V exclusion because it faces away from District V and its near a metro and tram stop)
If none light your fire. let me know and we look some more.
Try and arrive about 3 days early because its a big city. its about the same size as Chicago. The tourist zone is at least 5 times larger than the tourist area of Prague and two or three times that of Vienna. But it has an excellent network of Trams and Metro lines if you are wise enough to stay near a stop. The trams are actually like HOHO busses in other cities and the metro is sort of like what you find in airports so not intimidating at all. All easy to use. But there is nothing compact about tourism in Budapest and thats actually part of the beauty .......... the points inbetween are beautiful too.
And just for fun: https://youtu.be/1nd5AtZIrTk?feature=shared
I stayed at the Hotel Moments earlier this year. Great location. Charming architecture. Nice breakfast buffet. Free coffee, tea and filtered water available in the lobby at all times.
Mr. E. what do you know about Casati Hotel?
I haven't been in it since they remodeled it about 7 years ago. But, in that I live around the corner, I walk past it almost every day and it looks sweet. I do hit their bar from time to time (separate entrance). Nice selection of gin.
The street isn't the prettiest right now as a number of buildings are being renovated. But you will be less than 200 feet from Andrassy and the beauty there, especially at Christmas, more than makes up for it. The M1 metro stop is right there too and it will take you straight to the center of the Vorosmarty ter (largest) Christmas Market. But walk it the first time. Beautiful walk will take you 15 minutes down Andrassy ut and Deak Ferenc utca (Fashion Street).
Place always gets excellent reviews. Great location. Good choice.
I took this photo about a week ago. The Casati is behind and to the right of the building in the photo. Maybe 250 feet from where I am standing. Link dies in a few days
Frank II, I finally walked into the Hotel Moments. Beautiful. Love it.
We stayed 3 nights at Casati and loved it!
The location was great, the cost fit our budget, and the accommodations met our needs with no complaints. The breakfast was superb and the staff was wonderful.
We would stay again in a heartbeat and recommend it to others.
