Three people are travelling from Budapest airport to Oradea. No doubt that I will be jet lagged from the long trip, so me driving a rental car is unwise. One of us uses a walker. I know I can arrange for a private transfer, which would be easy but costly. What are my other options? Thanks in advance?

There are trains. Depending on when you arrive at the train station and which train you can catch it will take you 4 to 11 hours direct or with one change. Since most of the flights from the states arrive after 1 pm I am going to guess the best train will be the one that leaves at 16:40 and runs direct to Oradea in 5.5 hours. If you take your flight arrival time, add 1:45 to clear baggage and take public transport to the train station, then add another half hour for issues and orientation then your flight would have to arrive before 2:45 or so. If it comes in after then welllllllllll. You could expedite it a bit by taking a taxi to the train station for about $30; Oh, but add some additional time for the walker and the jet lag. That train arrives just before midnight.
If you do want to take the train why don't you wait till morning? Go check into the Marriott on the river embankment and have a world class afternoon and evening and head out early the next morning. There is a relatively fast direct train at 5:55 am http://elvira.mavinformatika.hu/
Better yet check with TransferBudapestHungary.com I have used them and they are reliable and not too terribly expensive. It's about a 3.5 hour drive from the airport. Split 3 ways it isn't a terrible cost.
