I'm looking to travel Budapest to Zagreb and/or Ljubjlana in October but understand the borders are closed to train travel and I'll need to go through Austria instead of directly. What is the situation and is it likely to change for the fall?

From Hungarian rail website:
As of 8 March 2016, InterCity trains IC200/201 (Agram) and IC204/205 (Rippl-Ronai) are available again for travelling between Hungary and Croatia (via Gyékényes border station). Magyarbóly border station remains closed until further notice.
