Summer is the end of the season in many theaters. But there are a few things going on

The Operett closes for the season in mid June. The Opera House and the Erkel Theater have a few things going on, but not much: http://www.opera.hu/musor/naptar/?y=2017&m=6#nap30 The Erkel is more of a local venue and not really very spectacular.

The Liszt Academy doesn’t show anything, but I would check back in May: http://lfze.hu/en/all-programs/-/program/search/-1/-1/20170320-*/2#program-listing Here you want something in the Grand Hall.

The Palace of Art has a few things. Look for performances in the Bartok Music Hall for the best performances. They also have programs for kids. https://www.mupa.hu/en/events/calendar/05/2017

But the big news in June when it comes to music is the Summer Festival. http://eng.szabadter.hu/

Also you might be interested in a Klezmer concert: http://www.spinozacafe.hu/index_Eng.html

And then there are the tourist church concerts: https://www1.classictic.com/en/special/budapest_church_concerts/2748/

Thanks James! The folk music looks interesting. Have you been there?

Not sure what you are looking at. Of it's at the Casino Building near the Basilica these are tourist shows, and not uninteresting. We did the folk dance thing about 7 years ago and my only complaint is that it was too long.

Other than that sort of thing and the church concerts, the rest of the venues will be more Hungarian than tourist.

James would prefer small church concerts or other local venues! We are going for a church concert in Vienna but won't mind doing it again as both my kids love classical music and play cello/violin!
Any suggestions?

Thanks

James E you mention that Summer is the end of the season. If a person was looking at a mid September trip (not this September) could they expect a greater variety of cultural events by then?

Thanks,
Peter
