Airbnb Notice to provide travel documents

I just received an airbnb message as follows:

"Before your arrival, I would like to inform you that from 1 September 2021, all guests will be required to provide personal data, your travel document must be scanned.
This information collection is a strict legal requirement by the Hungarian government and valid for all hostels, hotels, private accommodation. I send you the links where you can read about the data provision, which is mandatory for hosts."

Has anyone gone through this process? The host didn't actually tell me what kind of travel documents, nor where to submit them.

They need a copy of your passport. Legally they are required to register your stay with the government. (This is a good sign, not a bad one.)

As far as how to send a photo, I would ask them. If they meet you on arrival, it’s possible they can get it then. If it’s contactless arrival, as so many places are, you will need to send it either through air bnb messaging or via email.

Edit: note that THEY are reporting to the government, not air bnb. So the info goes to the host.

I had to do this for my upcoming trip too. I took a picture of our passports on my phone, and was able to send them through the Airbnb messaging system. (Look on your reservations for "send you host a message". I also had to do this for an Airbnb in Japan too.

I used to have an AirBnb in Budapest, yup, its the law. Feel good, cause if they are asking its a legal operation. They are asking now because there is a bit of paperwork they have to do and it's difficult on a cell phone at the door the flat while you stand and wait. Or because they are using a key box.

For my stay this month I was sent to a site to input my data and the place I was staying at.
