Airbnb near Nyugati Palyaudvar

I have booked an Airbnb for my family of 5 adults (30+) on Katona Jozsef ut (just a block away from the metro station.) Would this be considered a decent area to stay? It looks like it’s well connected with tram lines 4/6 and M3.

I’ve read a lot of suggestions for accommodation on Andrássy ut, but that was after I had booked the property. Should I look for something in a different area? We will be coming at the beginning of October, and the Airbnb is fully refundable until a few days prior.

Appreciate your help!

I know the street well. The Thai Market I shop at is on that street. If you want to see "interesting" walk in. That is a long street and AirBnb can be a bit deceptive sometimes, so you know it is within a block of Vaci ut (the train station basically)?

From a point of safety or interest or being "true Budapest" there is absolutely nothing wrong about it (you did see the overpass, right?). I suggest gong to Google Maps and do street view and walking around.

From the point of view of being close to the things to see, well its a bit out there and you will be riding public transportation a bit more than if you were closer to Andrassy ut or Deak Ferenc ter. But the M3 stop in the Nyugati Train Station underground is an unforgetable 3rd world experience. Do look around while you are down there. Its all safe but maybe the bar under the stairs where you will probably enter. Even its probably safe, but they look at me a bit funny when i look in the door so i just move on. Oh, if you are are really just feet away from Vaci ut then that big beautiful building with the birds on top of the domes was designed by Eiffel. I took Pilates in it last year. Quite a few of the buildings along there were Eiffel creations; as was the Train Station. The train station is worth the visit too. Behind it is the best modern mall in Budapest and within one end of the station is the most ornate McDonalds you will ever see. The best restaurant I know in the area is Persian. I had some Persian frined in town earlier this year and they say its the best they have had outside of Tehran. Is sort of "interesting" in a basement on a side street.

Now, every thing I just described you can see no matter where you stay. What that location is missing is the beauty of Andrassy ut in the evening and some convenience of location. The main reasons I suggest Andrassy so often (its a safe recommendation). BUT, its fully workable. You will just be taking the 4/6 Tram one stop to the Oktogon and Andrassy ut. Or one stop the other direction to 2 Tram (look for Colombo and his dog and some really interesting antique shops) that will take you to the Parliament the Chain Bridge, the Corso and the Great Market Hall.

I was absolutely no help was I? I try so hard to put my personal bias aside that I end up not being much help.

I will send you a PM with a few more thoughts.

Okay, I was a block off. My Thai place is one block over. And here is a photo of the street from last year. https://maps.app.goo.gl/z5dXDSYfLyqXP5FY8 The metro and the tram is a bit further than you think and getting across Vaci ut isnt fun on foot. Unless you got some sort of once in a lifetime bargain, I would look elsewhere.

If you find things you like, you can post them here or PM if you want, and I will look them up and tell you about the area and the connections to tourism and just enjoyment.

Thank you so much, Mr. E! I was hoping you would comment, and that’s exactly the kind of information I was looking for. (I admit, I couldn’t help but chuckle as I read your post and enjoyed it thoroughly. It was almost as if you were sitting across from me, describing this area). I did do a street view on Google Maps but was not aware of the overpass and the walk down Vaci ut. The Airbnb is just off Kresz Geza u, so it really is 5min away from the metro station (but not a very pleasant walk, it seems).

I will do some further research and ask you for your advice.

Always happy to help. I get a bit frustrated because a number on the forum have stayed in good AirBnbs in town but havent posted them on the forum.

Oh, what you dont know is that if it is 5 mintues to the nearest Metro Symbol on the map, those are the stairs down. From there its somehting just less than 5 minutes to the actual metro platform ... this is a large underground. About the largest in town. Then you have traffic waits at Vaci utca and up to 3 minutes for the metro its self. I would figure not less than 10 or 12 minutes if you hit every thing just right. The 4/6 tram about the same to the stop.

But both great to ride. I have been convinced to give orientation rides.

Ok, I will bite. I don’t like making apartment recommendations for the same reason I don’t like making hotel recommendations: we are all so different in what we value and are looking for.

But these are places I have actually stayed. They all have strengths and weaknesses, but I would stay at each again - no deal breakers. For me.

This is a place I have booked for a future visit but haven’t stayed in yet.

I have 4-5 others saved to check on, but I usually start over on my search each time.

My priorities are: elevator or ground floor; separate bedroom area as a strong preference; washer; coffee-maker of some sort; air conditioning; location. Location is key. I have discovered for my purposes, I like being close to Oktagon.

But occasionally I like a hotel.

Yup, you are one of three I was thinking about.

OP, do keep in mind that a US First Floor is a European Ground floor. An American 2nd floor is a European First Floor. From street to the next floor up in an American hotel will usually be 10 to 16 feet. In an old Budapest apartment block it could be as little as 16 feet or more than 20 feet. The floors above that tend to be about 12 feet floor to floor. Elevators are nice.

That's really helpful, thank you! And I completely agree with you TexasTravelMom - everybody's priorities are different. I also enjoy the occasional hotel, but for this trip's purposes, it will serve as a mini family reunion so we wanted an Airbnb (rather than two hotel rooms) with one of the requirements being 2 bathrooms (shower and/or bath), which is something I normally wouldn't look for.

I think I have been convinced that the best area is somewhere near Oktogon/close to Andrassy ut and will look for something in that vicinity. Thank you so much for your input!

Then to throw a monkey wrench in the works.... I met a lovely RS family today. They are staying in one of the last places I would suggest is good for tourism but after hearing about the little things and the host, maybe it's worth the tram ride. Speaking of which, you missed your metro stop.

I'm almost afraid to ask...but I've been going down a rabbit hole so maybe it won't make a too much of a difference haha. Where are they staying?

Here’s my thought.

You have a unique situation with 5 adults. So obviously my experience with apartments as a solo traveler is useless.

What I would say, though, is that space and arrangement may be a more important factor than the perfect location. I have friends, 5 adult females, who found a very nice large apartment further out than I would want. But they left in the morning, went sightseeing all day, then went back and visited and went to bed. They were not far from a tram stop but had a little longer ride than I would choose. For them, it didn’t matter at all. (I don’t remember where the apartment was, though.) You most likely need a nice common space to spend some time together and everyone may not be concerned with making the absolute most of their time.

You probably have a good idea what is central. I took a quick look through offerings on Air bnb for a random 4 night stay in November and found a number of 2-3 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartments in District 5 and even a couple in 7 worthy of checking out. (Districts 8 & 9 had more but felt further out to me. Mr. Ë will know more about that.) You may lose some flexibility for going back and forth to the apartment, but gain in “mini family reunion” feasibility.

Two other suggestions. One is the Medos Hotel does have 5 person family rooms, and three and two person rooms if you wanted spilt up. https://medoshotel.hu/en/accommodation/

Then there is this place. I just met a family staying there that love it. Not the location I would have chosen but the host appears to more than compensate for that. Maybe they have something or two somethings that work. https://maps.app.goo.gl/wy7P3T7a3HsZB8f39 . They got it through Booking.com.

These guys have apartments, but not real cheap but very nice: https://www.mamaisonizabella.com/en/hotel-rooms

MY VOTE, a nice location (Next door to the best wine bar in town and about a 4 minute walk to Andrassy ut) and is very new (about $180 a night for five in a 3 bedroom suite): https://www.k46residence.com/

Thank you so much for all your suggestions!!

TexasTravelMom, I believe you're right. I don't think we're planning on returning to our accomodation once we leave to sightsee in the morning. And after being out all day together, I imagine we wouldn't be sitting around too much in the living room (but I could be wrong).

I think we would prefer not to split up, and the bigger rooms at both the Medos Hotel and K46 residence appear to be sold out. Mr. E, if you're referring to Kadarka Wine Bar, I have it bookmarked already!
