6 Nights in Budapest (May) Itinerary Check

Hello, I'd appreciate your feedback on my tentative itinerary for my husband and I (mid/late-30s) this May. I haven’t filled in many of the meals or evenings yet or the exact timing of some things. Would love feedback on whether there are too many things in one day, if portions of days would better fit with portions of other days, if it is a light day, critiques on chosen time of day, something I’m missing that is nearby where I will already be etc.

Considering going to the Hungarian Opera House to see Maria Stuarda by Gaetano Donizetti on Friday. I have seen opera and enjoyed it, my husband I’m not sure would be as thrilled but I think he’d like it more than he thinks he would!

Also considering an evening cruise.

If you have any restaurant recs that fit into the itinerary let me know. I have a ton of places saved but a lot of times I end up not wanting to go out of my way too much even for a great restaurant. I also love restaurants/bars that have an interesting ambiance.

I am definitely someone who likes to really jam pack my days.

I was having trouble with the formatting here so here is a google doc link to my itinerary.

Day 1 - Monday: Market Hall/Vaci Utca

• Arrive at Budapest-Keleti Station at 12:19 PM. Take a cab to
Danubius Hotel Astoria

The M2 Metro connects the two.

• Take a 13 minute walk down Muzeum Krt to the Central Market Hall,

• Belvárosi Disznótoros - Károlyi utca –

nice choice

• Take a walk down Vaci Ut – not a big fan of Vaci utca.

It’s a bit of a tourist trap, but with 6 days you ought to do it once. So sure.

Evening: Szimpla Kert and maybe some other nearby bars:

sure. Nice walk.

Day 2 - Tuesday: Buda Castle District

Note: I’m still having trouble comprehending where all of the sites in
this area are in relation to each other and how long things will take
so below is not necessarily in order!

• Walk across Szecheny Lanchid to the base of castle hill and take the
funicular.

That is a very long walk from your hotel. I suggest getting on the 47/49 tram to market hall then the 2 tram to the bridge (2 tram is down the stairs under the bridge by the market hall. Then here is a possible route to your list of Buda Castle district stops: https://maps.app.goo.gl/HKZTpaBepMSyekj19 The DK Eyewitness Top 10 Guide for Budapest is very good for this.

Day 4 - Thursday: Parliament •

Parliament tour (45 minutes)

You have your tickets right? Cause they sell out fast.

• Walk and check out the antique shops on Falk Miksa u.

Be sure to check out Pinter Antiques at Falk Miska u 10 Especially the basements

• Take the 23 to Kerepesi Cemetery

And in the process you will see more of Budapest than most any tourist does. I cant say it wont be interesting. Or you could take the M2 metro. While you are out there, go to the Salgotarjani utca Jewish Cemetery

Evening: Maybe opera

Only if you already have tickets or don’t mind standing ….. unless you just get lucky.

Day 6 - Saturday: Margaret Island

• Take public boat to Margaret Island

Is it stil running? Good for you. I thought they closed it years ago. I have just never noticed it I guess. If that fails, its the 2 Tram to the 4/6 tram to the island.

MISSING is a an evening curise on the Danube to see the lights. Yes, do dinner with it.
MISSING is two glasses and a bottle of wine after sunset at the Citadel Lookout
MISSING is some of the great food to the city. Go here and you will find some resources. The Travel Notes contains my favorite list of restaurants. https://community.ricksteves.com/users/50322
And you know to get a 15 Day Travel Card I presume. For me the paper is a lot easier and you can get that at the bottom of the front stairs on the right, at the train station.
MISSING if you can tighten up your schedule just a little to make an afternoon free the trip to Szentendre and back is worth it.

Thank you so much Mr É! I was considering an evening cruise, thanks for putting me over the edge!

There are actually some opera seats left so I have a very short time to decide lol. I was also considering going to the food festival in Millenáris park you had shared with me on another post but I'm not sure if there will be time or not. Do you think it is still worth it to go for a shorter period of time? Looks like it is open until 11 PM so we could maybe go in the evening on either Thursday or Friday

Definitely go to the Opera - the building interior alone is worth it.

If you intend to dine at popular restaurants, be sure to make reservations in advance.

Millenáris park is an excuse to leave most of the tourists behind. I have never been, but I suspect it will be mostly locals. So thats nice. I think you are going to find you have extra time with your plans. thats a good thing in Budapest because just seeing the neighborhoods and ducking in for coffee or a beer is really part of the life. The park is a bit of a ways from the tourist area, but a straight shot on 4/6 Tram, maybe 15 minutes from Pest. Page 84 of the most current update. :-)

Day 2: You may have time for The Hospital in the Rock.
Day 3: The House of Terror is totally worth going inside.
Day 4: You may have some extra time.
Day5: You may not have enough time, depending on how long you spend at some places.
Day 6: You end in my favorite way. :)
