I just finished Rick Steves hippy trail Istanbul to Kathmandu and I’m glad I had the opportunity to have almost completed the trail in 1971 Sept-January of 1972.
For my journey I called it backpacking overland!
So unheard of for a 19 year old girl. My mentor an English professor at Polytechnic institution in Brooklyn NY had given us a guideline of what to do, not what to expect. I began recalling my trip in 1977 and now have decided to finish the journal.
The story Rick shared is truly amazing because I travelled from New York to London England took the ferry from Dover England to Amsterdam Holland then took a train through Germany Yugoslavia then on to Ankara Turkey when the trains ended and the rest of the road was by bus through Iran Afghanistan waiting for the border to open in Herat and then on to Kabul flying from Kabul Afghanistan to Delhi India then traveling by train to Varanasi then back to live in Goa India for three months
Rick filled in the places I missed and I am glad I turned around when I did.! I was supposed to go to the Shik palace and missed it I should’ve gone to Kathmandu and missed that as well, whew is all I can say beautiful places ! I got to see all the property I never knew existed.Goa had its moments since I grew up on the east coast there were palm trees which I climb so I could have fresh coconut and fresh mackerel fresh bread daily. When I tired of that there were baji beans that I thought came straight off the stove except they were spiced. I can’t eat spicy food to this day. I rented a coconut hut for the three months. Fetched my water from a well where I tied a rope to a clay pot, would lower it up and down until it eventually would hit the side of the well and I had to make a into Bombay to fetch a new one! There were European restaurants that served very inexpensive tasty meals for very cheap there. With a heat index of 115degrees daily it got old and back to the United States I headed My traveling companion didn’t follow directions we were given wound up like Gene getting ill along the way and so my wanderlust had begun!
