I was returning from Kathmandu on my way back to Britain. The coach from Kabul to Mashad stopped on the Iranian border for customs inspection. All bags and contents of pockets were to be checked. The young customs officer opened my wallet - and found the 10g of marijuana seeds I'd bought in Kathmandu. "Ah- hashish? , he said, almost unsure of his discovery. I said they were flower seeds- which technically they were. He pondered for a moment and the said I could keep them. I could see the frozen looks of the other travellers as they stood in disbelief. Just then an older customs officer came over to check the contents of my rucksack. He pulled out a small bronze kama sutra statue- holding it up to admire it. After laughing he informed me the statue was forbidden and it would be confiscated. Toughing it out I said it was just a souvenir. He thought for a moment and then allowed me to keep it. Outside the customs hall the group of Pakistani tourists asked if customs had gone smoothly. Lying, I said there were no problems. "Praise be to Allah" they said. We boarded the bus - relief never felt so good!
