Hi! A few friends and I are planning to stay on Santorini Island for a week in April and were wondering about any good youth hostels around the area. thanks!
Greece has a lot of cheap, family-run rooms available, so hostels are a lesser savings and less common. Off-season is a good time to just show up and look around, including considering any owners who meet the ferry to offer their rooms. www.villaroussa.gr has doubles from €35-50 in the off season, but I'm sure they won't be the only option. This one's in Rick's guidebook, but I'd also use Lonely Planet if you're going beyond the areas he covers.
My 20 yr old daughter and her friends just stayed on Santorini for 6 days this last May. They only meant to spend 2 nights there ( because Santorini is super pricey compared to many other islands) .. but the ferry to Ios was cancelled for some reason ( think it was a random strike or something ) and they were "stuck" on Santorini for longer and didn't have the budget for the more pricey room they had booked for just the two nights.
So they found a cheaper place in Kamari.. it was just off a block or so from a nice beach. They got a super nice ( they sent pictures) of a beautiful but casual suite of rooms.
They just got it when they got off the ferry... people stand there and offer rooms.
