Your Ideas on trips in the interior

We will be traveling to Greece the first 3 weeks of May 2025. We'd like suggestions on how to go from Athens to Delphi and also Meteroa. Is there a central place to stay to travel to and see both? Where would we find guides? It's not that easy to contact them directly. We don't want to drive - is hiring a driver worth it?

Thanks so much,
Mary Key

They are farther apart than you realize. Hiring a driver would be really expensive. Have you looked into tours?
Guides are separate and I usually find them by an internet search or via my accommodations.
Can you not drive period, or are you just apprehensive about it? (We see both types of questions, and we can put you at ease if it's the latter.)

You would stay in Kastraki or Kalambaka to see Meteora and Delphi to see Delphi. Driving is definitely the way to go, unless you take an organized tour. Driving in Greece outside of Athens is no problem, way easier than a US city, and if you pick up the car at the airport you’ll start out outside of Athens. Good luck with the trip!

Agree with @johnt. Pick up a car at the airport and head straight to Delphi. Spend the night, visit the historical site and then go on to Meteora. No guides necessary. Driving is easy, even for English only speakers. Delphi is interesting. Meteora is, literally, awesome! It was the highlight of our trip.

Thank you so much for your help - we can drive but were concerned about narrow roads and getting lost. Your pointing out how easy it could be helps.
How much time would you allot for these two excursions?

Best,
Mary

Driving is relatively easy outside major urban areas.

I've never driven to/or in northern Greece but I have driven on many islands and many areas of the Peloponnese.

However it could be slower than you think unless you are on major highways.

Due to the type of terrain like mountains, coastlines and going through villages it takes more time than you realize but still not difficult.

I would highly recommend some type of navigation system. I use Google Maps and it really makes a difference on getting from Point A to Point B.

There are several other navigation systems but Google Maps worked very well albeit with some "hiccups" here or there.

Time wise, I would want at least one night at Delphi and at least two for Meteora. If you have more time, there are plenty of other options to add on.
