Which two islands in Greece for a 10-12 day trip in August

We are 71 and 60 and are young at heart.
Its our first trip to Greece and we don't want to move around too much. When I look online every island sounds wonderful but we want to pick 2. We are interested in Corfu. So I'd like to know where in Corfu you recomend staying and should we rent a car?
The other part of this is what 2 islands would you pick and why.
Our favorite things when we travel are to walk around European towns, the food, the culture, the beach.
This trip is for us is to be in Europe and chill. But we do want some town activity. ( Not clubs mind you, we are not party people), but listening to music, sitting in a great outdoor cafe sipping wine, etc.
Love your input.

DO you have to go in August? You're both retired, not forced to go during kid vacations... if you wait till Sept 1, the huge European crowds will have eased off, beaches won't be so packed, it will be more relaxed, the sea will be divine, the weather will be pleasant but not the burny-hot of August.... It is hard to "chill" in August.

As for Corfu, it's a favorite of Brits (maybe because their Empire ran the place for more than a century, and it was one of the first islands to develop package holidays for UK budgeteers). We all watched "The Durrells in Corfu" on PBS & fell in love with it ... however, if you go, really do your research, so you can avoid the beaches that since the Durell era ( the 1930s) have filled up with purpose-built tourist accoms. There are lovely places, friends tell me, if you have a car to seek them out. The Trip Advisor forum is big on Corfu, lots of info from Brits & Germans, also big Corfu fans. ON R Steves forum, not so many from Europe, thus few Corfu experts. On this forum, lots of veterans of the Cyclades Islands, plus Crete, plus Peloponnese.

Corfu is such a beautiful island with a lot of things to do.If you want to explore it I recommend you to rent a car.You can also combine it with a trip to Paxos and Antipaxos that is like a little gem.August is such a busy period in both islands so I will recommend you to check for early September.
