Which cruise dates would you chose

Hi everyone,

Hubby and I have decided to take our first cruise to celebrate his 80th birthday. Sure did take us long enough🤣
We have never been to Greece. Celebrity cruise which includes several islands. Can’t decide which date is better as far as weather is concerned.
Departure date September 18 or October 14. It’s a 12 day cruise starting in Rome.

I truly appreciate input from all of the Greece weather/cruise gurus. Yes, I know the weather can be very unpredictable. We traveled this past September/October and experienced some very hot weather.

Happy travels.

I would choose September. While October should be Ok the weather starts to change in October. One year we spent 3 days in our hotel room because of a Cyclone in October.
Celebrity is a good Cruise Line.

Sue, what a fun decision to make. Happy Birthday to your husband!
A quick reminder that when taking a cruise it is always important to give yourself extra time before embarkation day. In the US, I would arrive a day early. In Europe, I might plan to arrive 2 days early just to give myself some "cushion" in case of airline irregular operations.

Whichever date you pick, I am sure this will be a special birthday.

I have been Googling "cruises to Greece" all day.

Please post a trip report when you get back.

And Happy Birthday to HIM!

Much better chance for good weather in September.

Perhaps Cruise Critic would also be a good resource for this question.
Have a wonderful trip!

Last time in Greece was November 1971 - high school trip - and weather was fine, although being teen from Canada nothing really bothered us. Now a senior from Florida, my temperature tolerance has changed. We did RS in Italy in Nov years ago and no weather complaints - similar to fall day in New England. We've done 3 RS tours and now looking at late 24 or 25

With respect to cruises, we have done 2 transatlantic with Celebrity and found them to be excellent, no hesitation in recommending. However, we just cancelled a Celebrity Greek Island cruise from Barcelona to Athens in May 2024. Why?
1) Ship was full capacity whereas the 2023 transatlantic had more crew then passengers.
2) After seeing multiple ships in a small ports - more passengers then residents, we revisited the trip. Too many tourists and the locals headed out of town. Another issue was some tours had to turn back early because not enough room at out of town attractions.

I used www.cruisetimetables.com and www.cruisemapper.com to cross reference ports and dates. We found that our day in Rhodes has 9 big cruise ship scheduled for same day. Similar result, although not as extreme, for most of other Greek ports.

Therefor, we cancelled the cruise at looked for alternates. All the RS Greece tours were booked. Also looked at Danube river cruise also fully booked for our available time. Ultimately, found a Greek tour with another company - seems to be similar to RS but not as comprehensive.
Also found some small ship Greek cruise lines that would have worked but like the opportunity to spend 3 days each in Mykonos, Santorini and Crete + 5 days in Athens - with a lot of free time in each.

We will see how it goes!

I was in the Greek isles 4 years ago for 2 weeks, ending Oct 19. The weather was almost always sunny and warm enough for swimming. Then I spent 4 days in Athens, also warm and sunny.

A big plus was that there were no tourist crowds anywhere except Santorini. However, the tourist season was winding down by mid-October and on smaller islands there were fewer day tours offered and some tourist shops were closed.

We love Celebrity Cruise lines and have done two cruises that visited Greece and some of the Greek Islands.

I think a cruise is a great way to visit the Greek Islands. Sep or Oct, would be just fine.

Don't miss taking in the Parthenon at the Acropolis and the New Acropolis Museum near the Acropolis.

You can take the train from the port into Athens and walk to the Acropolis.

Watch you wallet and valuables, pickpockets are out there.

Sue,
My husband (76)and I (66) are also heading to Greece for our first time. We found a cruise company called Azamara. So we booked a cruise on the Azamara Journey for Sept. 2024. It's a mid ship, only 696 passengers. They're known for their immersion in the stops. They stay longer than most of the Big ships and because Azamara is smaller in size, they can literally pull up and dock at some of the places the massive ships can't. Go to youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bdhv0TINBqk&t=62s and take a look. I'm hoping it's as nice as it looks.

We're flying into Greece 3 nights before the cruise starts so we can visit Athens. Then after the cruise, we booked a hotel on the outskirts of Athens for 5. Then We're doing a 2-day with an overnight in Meteora then heading to Delphi the following day. Making our way back to Gylfada (outskirts of Athens), then eventually home. I'm still working on our tours and agenda. Would have loved the RS 13-day Greece tour, but hubby wanted to see the islands. Anyway, thought I'd share what we're working on.
