Where to stay in Crete - Chania or outskirts of Chania

Hello,
We are thinking of a 9 day Greece vacation for family of 4 (with 2 kids) from April 21, 2025 - April 30, 2025 with 3 days in Athens and then in Crete from April 25-29. We will be in Crete for 4 nights and planning to stay in Chania for first 3 nights and 1 night in Heraklion. Planning to take a flight to Chania on April 25th evening from Athens and flight from Heraklion on April 29th eve back to Athens.

In Chania, we are considering 2 hotels - Casa Kallergi in Old Town and Hotel Ammos. We are interested in exploring Old Town on foot, visit Balos/Falasarna/Elafonissi, visit Rethymno, etc. Given the time we have and excursions, I feel like we should stay in Old Town. But I have heard rave reviews of Ammos, so was wondering if that would a good choice for us.

Any suggestions/input would be highly appreciated.

Thank you!

Well, personally I would never choose where to stay based on the hotel. We stayed in old town and would never stay anywhere else.

You have a very short trip. Can you reverse the order of Athens and Crete? Then you can gain a night. So fly to Crete first and have four or five nights. Then fly back to Athens and have 3 or 4 nights. Add your extra night to either Athens or Crete. This way can spend last night in Athens itself rather than by the airport waiting for your flight the next day.

You can do this either on one ticket which is what we did or by buying a separate ticket from the Athens airport for later that day to go to Chania, Crete. We did the latter when we went to Santorini a few years earlier because it was crazy expensive to get on one ticket but that was not true when we went to Crete. Easier on one ticket of course.

We just returned from our second trip to Crete and both times stayed in the Chania old town area. We did several excursions and it was no problem doing that from there. Our favorite thing was a Cretan cooking class, they picked us up and brought us back.
