I read some not so flattering things about Corfu on another thread here. My husband, myself, and a friend will be meeting up in Corfu the third week of June - We arrive June 20th and leave to Italy on the 29th. Just wondering if there are any good areas to stay on Corfu that don't require a car rental to get to. We'd like to visit a beach and maybe an archaeological site. We plan to be in Corfu Town the first day, move on to an undecided city, and leave to Saranda/Ksamil for a couple of days before flying to Athens on the 27th for two nights. Any ideas on how to split our time would be great as well as hotel apartment recommendations!
Thank you!
There are a lot of Corfu enthusiasts on Trip Advisor -- if you listen to the independent travelers (usually from UK) on that forum, not the ones who go there on all-inclusive holiday packages, you can get a lot of information about places that are less dominated by "resort development".
Corfu is a beautiful place, but I would only recommend it with a rental car. The northern part of the island is much less overrun by package tourists (which you will find in abundance in the southern part). I recommend the Paleokastritsa area for beaches galore, sightseeing, snorkling, and hiking. There are nice hotels and on the northern coast there are many rentals. The water is postcard perfect. You can rent boats and go to private beaches or hire one to drop you off for a set period of time any where you'd like. There are day trips to Albania to visit Roman ruins from the north. And you can drive to Corfu Town for some city shopping and dining in the evenings. Best of all worlds.
