We are interested in visiting Meteora by car from Athens and want to know about other nearby places of interest to explore during our 4 days trip in the region. Are there any towns or attractions en route or within an hour's drive from Meteora that you could recommend before returning to Athens?
On the way back to Athens, you could stop at Lake Plastira.

En route to Meteora, you can stop at Delphi.
Do you have 4 days in the Meteora area? I would recommend staying in Kastraki, instead of Kalambaka.
You could easily spend 2 days there if you want to visit more than a few of the monasteries. I also enjoyed a day trip to the Arched Bridge of Portaikos River at Pyli and the small 13th century Church of Porta Panagia, then a wander by the river in Trikala.
I have heard that Metsovo is a nice town to visit (an hour or so drive) but I haven’t been yet.
You know what we enjoyed when we were in Meteora (Kastraki) with a car? Just driving around the countryside. Its a beautiful part of Greece. Reminds me of Switzerland in many ways. Just get yourself lost, enjoy the villages and countryside, and use GPS to get back home.
Thank you very much for all your responses and ideas. We are so looking forward to going to Greece for my 60th birthday bucket list.
