We have a day in Athens planned for when we arrive and will be in Spetses for the wedding and other events for 4 days. After that we have 3 full days to ourselves and we would like to quickly explore but also unwind! I am very overwhelmed by trying to figure out where to go next, please send suggestions! The bride and groom are recommending Hydra or Poros--we are definitely excited to relax and swim in the ocean.
Hydra if you want to totally relax and swim…but don’t need a beach. The swimming in Hydra is off of large flat rocks. No sand or beach. Wonderful if you are a good swimmer. Hydra is also a great place to relax because there is not much to do except wander slowly around the town, shop and eat, and enjoy Greece. No cars on Hydra, a unique picturesque place.
If you want to alternate swimming, relaxing and activities, then go to Poros. Stay in the Askeli Beach area. Nice stretch of sandy beach with chairs and umbrellas to rent and plenty of good Greek restaurants. A cheap taxi ride will take you into the main Poros town for shopping and more restaurants. You can even do a day trip to Hydra, only one hour by ferry.
Please share how you are getting to Spetses.
If you have a car and the ferry schedule allows it, I would drive up the mainland to Nafplio, then return to Athens.
Without a car, I'd stop on one of those islands mentioned en route back to Athens via ferry.
valadelphia, I agree with your approach. We went from Napflio a short distance where we parked and took a water taxi across to Spetses. The poster should do this in reverse. Have a taxi meet them.
Another vote for Hydra! We were just there in May. And there actually is one sandy beach located at the Mandraki Beach Resort (you will need to rent a chair if you're not a guest). We also like Vlychos beach (pebbles). If you like hiking in addition to relaxing :) you can hike up to Mt Eros for some amazing views.
