Howdy. I'm a 74 year old woman, I travel solo, so I'm alert in wonderful new towns and places. Are the National Gardens in Athens, behind the Parliament Building (Syntagma Square), considered safe for daytime strolling? I love gardens and botany and would love to see how these are displayed. I'm a veteran of NYC's Central Park, but I'm not sure that's a good benchmark.
The monk parakeets can get a bit frisky.
The worst thing that can happen to you in the National Garden, even late at night (it's illuminated at night), is, in my opinion, getting bitten by an insect.
I felt completely safe in that part of Athens. We stayed in the Mets neighborhood which is on the Southeast corner of the gardens. We walked through the gardens every day we were there. There are always other strollers. The garden is also surrounded by heavily guarded sites, so there are many security personnel in the area.
The big surprise for me was the Parakeets. They have giant nests and are quite vocal at different times of day. It is truly a beautiful place to walk.
If you want another interesting place to stroll, try the First Cemetery of Athens. It is very peaceful and quiet.
The National Gardens in Athens are a real less-well-known gem. Absolutely safe, and beautiful.
Thanks everybody. I look forward to some quiet time in a beautiful garden.
