If anyone is looking for something to do for an afternoon in Athens, I highly recommend Bespoke Food Tours (https://bespokefoodtours.com/ ) Vivian was our guide and did a wonderful job! She was knowledgeable in Greek and local history and also culinary history; she was able to give us information about the evolution and history of many of the foods we ate.
She took us to a number of eateries in old Athens that have been family-owned for generations. In many cases, she explained the preparation process (the coffee preparation process, using hot sand to heat the drink, was particularly interesting). She pays for all the food the tour participants eat, so she is able to focus to the places with the best food, not the places that give guides “special deals”. She is training to be a sommelier, and did an excellent job pairing the food we ate with the appropriate drinks!
She is an enthusiastic and very personable guide who relates well with the folks on her tour. Actually, not only did we have an excellent tour, we also made a new friend that we will be sure to contact next time we come to Greece.
I must point out that the is a one person operation (like many of the guides that Rick Steves deals with in his travels), so it is important to contact her in advance and make reservations. I promise you that if you do. You will be happy you did!
