We are taking a family trip to Greece in the summer. We'll be there for a week or so, and hoped there might be some kind of social service organization to spend several hours or a day with. Is there a way for visitors to connect up with organizations in need of volunteers? (Or would we just be in the way since we don't speak Greek?) Thanks!
A very quick Google search showed a variety of organizations.
Why don’t you start here and see if anything meets your criteria : https://www.gooverseas.com/volunteer-abroad/greece
Thanks Claudia. The link goes to programs where volunteering is the purpose of the trip abroad, or at least, where people can dedicate a week or more to a particular service project. They seem like great programs but they are not what we are looking for. Our purpose is to have a family trip/vacation abroad, but we are hoping to take some time away from sightseeing to help out in the community where we're visiting -- for instance with an organization that might need volunteers for several hours or a day. Like a trash cleanup or serving meals or whatever. I've been searching and found nothing. Perhaps one has to be on the ground already and just knock on some doors?
If you go to Santorini you can volunteer at the local animal welfare site: http://www.sawasantorini.org
