Our ship ( May 2019) proposes an excursion to go sail on the Nea Kameni volcano and climb its edges. Then sail towards the Palea Kameni hot springs for a dip. Sounds adventurous and different. Just wondering if it is worth seeing or should we just spend our time exploring the villages of Fira and Oia instead?
Also, is the water warm enough to swim in the Agean sea at this time of year?
I did it and it is worth seeing. Our guide put an egg into a hole in the volcanic ash and in few minutes it was cooked hard and ready to be eaten. They anchor ship about 50 meters from the shallow bay where the hot springs are in the bottom. You have to swim there from the ship. I did it in early November and I cannot say that the sea water was warm. In the bay with hot springs yes. But then swimming back to ship water seemed really cold. My educated guess is that in May it would be significantly warmer.
I'm glad to know that! Thank you.
