Very preliminary itinerary for a trip to Greece next year

Thinking about 14 nights in Greece - ideally in May or September.

Arrive in Athens, stay 3 nights;
Rent a car for drive to Monemvasia, stay 3 nights (maybe drive to Mani peninsula one day);
Drive north to Nafplio (by way of Mystas for mid-day visit), stay 3 nights (see Mycenae and Epidaurus);
Drive north and west to Delphi, stay 3 nights;
Drive to Vouliagmeni for final decompression, stay 2 nights, leaving for the airport early on the last day.

We don't get the islands, but will save them for another trip. This is an early first stab. I realize there's a bit of backtracking, but without taking long, long drives through the west Peloponnese, I don't see a way to avoid them. Can shake it up by stopping at different places going south and then north.

Comments from those who have been there?

Monemvasia is basically just a giant open-air museum with no permanent residents aside from a few tourist accommodations. You can see the whole place in 2 or 3 hours; after that, there’s really nothing left to do.

Also, keep in mind that you can't drive into the old town itself. You have to park along the incoming road if you can find a spot. Otherwise, you'll need to park in Gefira, the village a 20-minute walk away or at the parking lot located at the start of the road leading to Monemvasia. So, using Monemvasia as a base when you have a car is not really convenient.

In my opinion, those three nights would be much better spent in the Mani Peninsula, with a potential day trip to Monemvasia.

Personally, I find Vouliagmeni and the entire surrounding coast to be rather ugly. It’s an area cut through by a wide 4 or 6 lane avenue running through somewhat concrete-heavy neighborhoods, packed with international resorts that look like secured vacation camps. But if that's the kind of vibe you're looking for to your "final decompression" , why not.

We just got back from Peloponese. We stayed one night in Monemvasia. We liked it a lot more than JoLui but agree it is not a good base. It is not easy to go back and forth from. It also is too far from Mani Pennisula for a day trip.

I would suggest instead that you stay one night in Monemvasia and 2 nights in Gytheo. We had already seen the Mani Pennisula (from Aeropoli ) by the time we got to Gytheo but it is a reasonable place to do so. Gytheo is a pleasant town on the water that is reasonable to come and go from. We used it as a base to visit Mystras, a winery, and to visit the beach.

Really appreciate the feedback. My preliminary itinerary was generated largely by AI. In my old Europe through the back door Rick doesn’t cover Greece. Still trying to generate a sensible itinerary for this country!

When it comes to using AI for trip planning, I did a few tests (just for fun) based on my own knowledge of Greece. When asking questions that were too broad, the AI failed miserably most of the time, giving bad advice based on false or outdated facts.

So, I ran a test with the Gemini AI about staying 3 nights in Monemvasia to explore the Mani. After a while, it finally admitted:

'If your primary goal is to explore the Mani, basing yourself in Monemvasia is not just inconvenient due to parking—it is a logistical nightmare.'

So be careful with AI. You really have to know how to ask the right questions. And to ask the right questions, you need firsthand experience.

You will be travelling early in the tourist season so there will not be hoards of visitors in competition with you for parking and getting hotels. Our experience is always in May or September.

Monemvasia, is one of our favourite places in the Mainland. Imagine yourself in a period room inside the walls of a fortified village. For us it is magical. One of our Greek friends said she and her husband find Monemvasia to be very romantic.
The hotels have restored rooms throughout the village.

How to manage Monemvasia.
There is a long road up to the gates. We drive up and if there is a parking spot close to the gate we snag it right away. If not available we get to the gate and our hotel brings a wheelbarrow and takes our luggage to reception. I drive the car back down the hill until I find a parking spot on the hill. I walk back to the hotel and later in the day or early evening the day trippers are gone and we have always been able to find a parking spot closer to the gate.

I do agree that you probably will not need 3 days at Monemvassia. One night should do it unless you want to use it as a base to tour in the surrounding area.

Without wanting to start a debate, I can't help but remember what we saw in Monemvasia, those poor older guys dressed in rags, hauling tourists' luggage in their old wheelbarrows all day long under a scorching sun, which is the most shocking thing I’ve seen in Greece. I wondered if slavery, which was legal during the Ottoman Empire, was truly abolished in the 19th century.

I'm another who felt Monemvasia was just OK but many others like it.

However, it's not a great base for Mystras.

I stayed in Gythio for a number of days and really liked it's nice Greek Vibe and a good base to explore the Mani, Mystras and if you really want to see Monemvasia it would make a good day trip from Gythio.

As far as AI goes for help it's over rated and you don't always get the type of information you really need to make an informed decision.
