I have read you can use the Uber app in Athens and that it works just like in the US but it will be a yellow taxi instead of a personal car. Has anyone used Uber to get from the Athens airport to their hotel? If so, where does the Uber driver meet you? Is there a designated car-hire area at the airport, or do they come to wherever the regular taxis are located? Does the cab's license plate number come up, just like the car's license plate does in the US with an Uber? Are the rates similar to a traditional taxi in Athens? Thanks in advance!
I haven't used Uber in Greece but you should know it's a fixed taxi rate from the airport to central Athens.
I used a company called Welcome Pickups for my trip from the airport into Athens. The driver had a cab. He spoke English, had a clean car, and met me as I exited customs. He also had a cold bottle of water for me and the car had wifi.
My hotel was near the Plaka. I think Welcome Pickups charged just a few Euro more than the fixed taxi rate. But you're paying more for the extra service.
The flat rate by taxi to the city center is €40 from 5:00 a.m. to midnight (€55 from midnight to 5:00 a.m.). In Greece it is mandatory to have a taxi license to be a taxi driver. Some taxi drivers use the Uber app (or Freenow).
If you take a taxi without using Uber or Welcomepickups, let the driver know that you know the official flat rate. It includes tolls and baggage. Some drivers might try to make you believe there are surcharges.
I have never used Uber in Greece but I understand that there is a specific spot for Uber pickups at the airport, the app will tell you where to find the driver. You will be charged a little more than with a non-Uber taxi.
If you pre-book a taxi with welcomepickups the driver will be waiting for you with a sign with your name at the exit to the public area of the airport. As you will have been asked for your flight number, the driver will know if you are on time
There is also a welcomepickups app which is not essential but with which you will have all the information needed in real time .
You will also pay a little more than the official flat rate
I 2nd Jolui's response. I travel solo with my backpack. I prebooked welcome pickups in Athens and Paros from airport to lodging last year. Good experience. They also provide a photo and name of the driver prior to pickup. When I reached my destination I thanked the driver and was on my way. I have welcome pickups booked for Athens transfers next month.
We have used airport express bus X95 for airport to/from Syntagma Square many times. Cost 6 euros each one way. Frequent buses. Our stays have always been within easy walk from Square, including the edge of Plaka area.
You go to the taxi pickup area. The license plate and car model is listed on the app when you get assigned a driver
