We will be in Greece late September to mid October and want to operate out of two bases. I don’t like moving around. One base will be Athens. We were thinking of making our second base in Thessaloniki. Will visit some sites but mainly people watching, enjoying the vistas and eating. Thoughts?
I am in Thessaloniki now. I like it but is still pretty urban like Athens. It is not heavily touristed which I do like. Still, I would be inclined to select a smaller city. I would probably pick Nafplio. It has a large historical center, sites within the city and lots to see nearby. We were there a couple days ago and found it much more touristy now than when we were there in 2018. So partly depends on what you are looking for.
How about somewhere in the Peloponnese which is a wonderful part of the mainland with a huge number of options?
I stayed in Gythio in the south of the peninsula and it's a wonderful town to stay in as it's not overly touristy, has a long waterfront, beautiful neoclassical buildings and great Greek Vibe on the back streets plus numerous options for shops, markets and restaurants.
Excellent base to explore the Mani, day trip to Mystras, Monemvasia and close to numerous beaches, villages, mountains and just about everything one would want in a Greek stay.
You can check out a trip report that includes Gythio plus photos to get an idea of what a great town it is:
