Nafplio is an easy trip and perfect to pair with Athens. Are you open to car rental or do you want to stick to public transit?
Another thought is Thessaloniki, a city I found reading about fascinating but have not made the trip yet.

Nafplio is a really easy drive, practically no turns on a modern highway, then some rural driving. Having a car puts you in easy reach of many excellent sights in the Peloponnese--Epidaurus, Mycenae. You'll pass ArcoCorinth/Corinth and Nemea en route. I think it would be perfect, but you might want to decide how much time you'd like to spend in Athens first.
Thessaloniki seems to fly under the radar and I can't figure out why, but I googled right after I suggested it and unfortunately the train takes longer than I thought (about four hours, five to drive).

I love Thessaloniki but I think it’s too far if you are only in Greece for 5 or 6 days. Nafplio is a good suggestion especially, as mentioned, given you can take in Mycenae on the trip down and Epidavros on the drive back.

Another good bet is a day trip to Aegina which gives a taste of the islands. Janet, who often posts here, has good information on this so I won’t go into detail.

Personally I wouldn’t try and do both Aegina and Nafplio. Athens has a lot to recommend for a few days and some of the pleasure, for me at least, is relaxing into the Greek pace of life.
