Transportation to and from the Samaria Gorge

Thanks to all for answering all my questions as we prepare for our September trip. Unfortunately, I can't write that this is my last question but I appreciate the help this forum has provided.
Question: I have read most posts for many months. However, I may have missed the answer to my question. We are staying in Chania. I read on one post that we could take a bus to the Gorge, walk the trail to arrive at Agia Roumeli. At that point we take a ferry to Chora and then catch a bus to Chania. That said, I also read I need to have all tickets in hand before we leave Chania. Do I go through a travel agent there? If so, any recommendations. I also read a taxi will pick you up at Chora, but that would be a greater expense.
Thoughts and suggestions appreciated.

You have the basics pretty much correct.
You may want to go to any travel agent in Chania and book an excursion. That would include a bus trip to the top of the Gorge and ferry from Agia Roumeli to either Sougia or Chora Sfakion and a bus trip back to Chania.
You can do the trip by KTEL bus on your own. You would get to the bus station early morning and buy your bus tickets. I stand to be corrected but I think you can buy your return bus tickets when you buy your tickets to the top. If not you can purchase your return ticket in Chora Sfakion. There is a ticket office In Agia Roumeli where you can purchase your ferry ticket to Chora Sfakion. You could also choose to take the ferry to Sougia where a KTEL bus is waiting for the ferry to arrive before the return trip to Chania.

Frankly to take the worry out of the logistics just book the trip with a tour company.

We used this travel agency in Chania to make some plans but not for what you asking. We rented a house from them and they arranged for another place to stay on Crete’s south coast. But they will arrange for many tours on Crete, excellent agency. Ask for Maria.
