Train travel from Athens to Kalambaka

Planning travel from Athens to Kalambaka in mid September after Rick Steve’s tour. Wondering if train travel is reliable and safe in Greece. The train schedule lists 3 hours by train then transfer to bus for 2 hours. There is just 15 minute time lapse between the two. Am assuming the transfer must be at the same station? Does anyone have experience with this?

Part of the train journey is by bus due to the floods of September 2023 which severely damaged the railway infrastructure.

Bus departures are synchronized with train arrivals and will wait if there is a delay.

Train is awkward between Athens and Kalambaka, even without flood closures. And then once in Kalambaka there is not a great public transport system to get you around.

Would you consider driving? We did it. It was very easy and most enjoyable to have a car. We stopped enroute at the Thermopylae battle site and at a village for coffee. Car was useful to get to our hotel (Doupiani House, in Kastraki, close to the monasteries) and to travel around the beautiful countryside.
