Train or drive Athens to Meteora?

We'll be in Greece in late March and are planning a couple of days to visit Meteora. We land in Athens on a Saturday late afternoon. Our plan is to leave for Meteora the following morning. We'll spend a couple nights in that area before returning to Athens and then flying to Santorini. I'm considering two options for travel...

Option 1:
- Stay in a hotel in central Athens after our flight
- Take an early morning train to Kalambaka/Meteora
- 2 nights in Meteora
- Early morning train back to Athens
- Transfer to airport for a 13:35PM flight to Santorini

Option 2:
- Stay in a hotel near the Athens airport when we arrive
- Rent a car at the airport and drive to Meteora
- 2 nights in Meteora
- Drive back to ATH for our 13:35PM flight to Santorini

When I write it out, Option 2 seems less complicated. I'm a little concerned about getting to our flight on time in Option 1 if our train is delayed. What do you think? How is the drive from Athens to Meteora?

if our train is delayed.

And if you have an accident? Or if someone else have an accident and the roads get congested?

If you are worried about missing your flight, take the train back to Athens the day before and spend the last night in Athens.

I think the train sounds like your better option, if they are fairly reliable in Greece - which I don't know. I agree with the other writer that the car leaves too many options for delays open.
