Tour Guides for Mycenae and Delphi

I'm planning to visit Mycenae and Delphi in a few weeks and I'm finding it difficult to locate a guide or tour of these locations that is available. Does anyone having any guide recommendations that might be helpful? I'm happy to see if they might be available while I am in the area. Also, if I end up striking out on finding a guide, does anyone have any recommendations on audio tour guides for these and other sites in Greece? I'm open to paying for one but only if it's good. I love anything with lots of history, architecture, culture, mythology, etc.

I should add that I'll be staying in Nafplio and Delphi for several days and I'll have my own car, so I have no need for someone to drive me around if that's helpful. I'm mainly looking for a two-hour tour of these sites where I can meet someone at the site if that is something that is even available in Greece at these or similar sites.

As I recall there are licensed tour guides at the main gate at Delphi. They wait until they have enough people (10) and then begin the tour. I do not remember if it was the same at Mycenae.

We did see any guides at Mycenae when arrived. I agree it would have been helpful.

I was leading a group of 10 people around Greece in June 2018 and Delphi was on our itinerary. A guide at Delphi was not part of my offering, but the group asked if I could arrange one for their visit to the ancient site.

I just performed a basic Google search and found several options. The man who I hired was excellent, full of great stories, and really brought the place to life. I think I paid him 200 Euros or less for a couple hours, though I would imagine many guides charge much more.

Guides at these sites must be Greek citizens and possess a certain amount of education in the field they are talking about, so it's really unlikely to find an incompetent guide.

When I'm travelling alone I read the heck out of Rick Steves' books and sort of guide my own tours based on his information, but a good guide adds so much.

Thank you much everyone. If any of you have any names of guides in particular you might recommend, I'd be happy to reach out to them. Many of the ones I have tried are booked. Hoping I'm not too late in the season to book someone at this point.

Have you tried Penny Kolomvotsou? She is a fantastic Delphi guide. She is so passionate about sharing her knowledge of Delphi. She appears in one of the RS videos (I don’t recall which one). And she’s listed on page 367 of the RS 2020 Greece guidebook ([email protected]).

Thank you very much. I know Georgia is already booked. I believe I did try Penny as well...but I'll reach out to her again in case she has a new opening. I figured perhaps there were good folks that hang around the gate that might be good tour guides as well that perhaps aren't as well known or easily reached. Will have to see how things work out I guess in case I'm unable to find anyone online for the time being that is available while I'll be in delphi.

You could always write to Penny and say you'd prefer to have here but know she is booked & ask if she could recommend another licensed guide friend. Guides in an area like that are usually friends.

Perhaps Penny could recommend a guide if she’s unavailable? I do hope she’s available for you though, she’s tops for sure.
