tour guide for Athens

Hi Everyone,

So we decided at the very last minute to go to Greece in mid-March. Can anyone recommend a tour guide for Athens and the surrounding areas that might be worth a day-trip? Because we don't have much time to plan, I think it's easier to just rely on a good tour guide.

Also, do any of you have a recommendation for airlines that fly between islands? We are planning to go to Athens, Ikaria and Santorini.

Thank you in advance!

Sorry, I don’t know any tour guides but I can tell you that Olympic Air and Aegean Air are the two airlines that fly from Athens to Greek islands in March.

Be aware that many islands are very quiet in March, with not many restaurants or hotels available. I’m not sure about Santorini but I would suspect Ikaria is pretty closed down. A larger island like Crete or Rhodes might be a better choice — perhaps even Naxos.

If we had details about how much time you have available and any special interests, I’m sure we can give you some great suggestions.

We have a flight to Naxos from Athens with Sky Express. We used Google flights, and this was the only flight to Naxos.

Several hotels I contacted were closed, but fortunately we found a place to stay.

I'm looking forward to our time in Naxos since there won't be many tourists.

Hi Charlene,
We will probably have between 9-11 days there (I'm still trying to work out details to see how long we can be away for). I know Ikaria will probably be closed down for the most part, but that's ok, because I want to go there simply because it is considered to be one of the world's blue zones with the largest number of healthy centenarians so I am just very interested in learning about their way of life.

We would also probably like to visit Santorini if time allows. My son will be traveling with me and he has seen photos of Santorini so that part of the trip would be for him.

As for Athens, my plan is to save that for the last part of the trip so that we can get tested for COVID before flying back to the U.S. I'd like to see the major sights there like the Parthenon and Acropolis and the National Museum and any other attractions that are not too far away.

My life is so hectic back at home so I'm really not looking to hop from place to place. Less is more within reason.

Thanks for the tips for Athens Walks. Did they also help you coordinate flights between islands. We are just traveling between Ikaria, Santoriini and Athens.

For most flights between islands in Greece, you have to fly back to Athens and then fly to your your next island. For help coordinating these flights, you’d need to spend some time with a website like Google Flights, or contact a travel agency — such as Fantasy Travel in Athens.

For your current itinerary, this means you’d have to fly into Athens and then, a few hours later, fly to Santorini or Ikaria. Spend three nights on that island, then fly back to Athens and, a few hours later, fly to your second island. After two or three nights, fly back to Athens for three nights, then back to the airport to fly home. Six flights in 9 days is a lot. You may want to limit yourself to one island.

We loved the time we spent with owner Kostas of Athens Walks. He is a local and knows Athens so well unlike many of the guides on tours offered by international companies. Kostas is a former Palace Guard.
