Toll roads in Greece

Hello, We will driving from the Athens airport to Meteora at the end of our RS Tour next month. Do the tolls roads all take cash and credit cards? Is there an app or transponder we should use? In the states it is supposedly much more expensive to use the transponder with a rental car. Is that the case in Greece? Thanks!

I did this drive a few years ago. I didn't even remember that there were tolls, which means I prepared absolutely zero for them. Cash and/or credit cards must be sufficient.

Assuming there are tolls on that road... We did the Athens to Nafplio round trip in October 2021. There were several toll plazas along the way. They all had well marked lanes for full service/cash, it was very easy. It helps if you have a good co-pilot to read signs and count change for you!!!! We only used cash, not sure if credit card is even an option.. You can Google "Greek Toll Roads" to see what the toll plazas look like. Also, we got a kick out of grabbing lunch at the rest areas. "Goody's" has good chicken strips and fries!!!

Thanks for this thread. We're driving from the Athens airport to Nafpoli in May and this helps answer some questions. I'd prefer cash since credit cards have their foreign transaction fees".

We have done the trip to Nafplio as well as to Meteora. You cannot miss the toll booths they are large. I believe they took credit cards but we brought cash. The tolls to Nafplio cost 14 to 16 euros. You simply choose a lane that takes cars. There are diagrams showing you which lane to take. If you have exact change I recall you just throw it into a basket that counts it and the gate opens. If you have larger bills the attendant will take the money and give you change.

Once you get off the toll road and head south to Nafplio the road is a standard two lane highway with no tolls. Same for Meteora once you turn west from the toll road its a standard two lane highway, no tolls.

Like jimmy, I had a bag of cash and a copilot who helped with seeing ahead how much and counting it out. However there were a few times I used a card - either way worked at all booths. I don’t think an app or transponder is an option, unlike some other countries.

Jeff, i know how annoying credit cards can be with their rip-off % charges abroad... especially when there's NO charge at home, if you pay it off monthly. One way around it is to open an account at a Credit union -- if one is available in your area -- and get a debit card for use abroad as a credit card. These days many credit unions are available to any resident in the area served. I opened an account at Philadelphia Credit Union, which I use JUST for travel, because of no % charge (other than the 1% "clearinghouse" charge tht is built into 100% of cards). NOTE: You must officially notify the CU in advance you will be using card abroad & ascertain the daily withdrawal amount & get it raised if u want & make sure it's entered in your account records. I know, officialdom -- but it can save you BIG BUcks, if you're using a card to pay all your hotel bills.

Regarding credit card fees for foreign transactions, there are several that don't charge for foreign transactions.

I have a MC Quicksilver card and there are no foreign transaction fees so I have no problem using the card in Greece.

Comes in handy as Greece know makes it mandatory for businesses to accept credit cards.

Thanks, Janet. We do have foreign transaction fee free credit and debit cards with Capital One. Capital One says with their chip technology, you do not have to notify them of foreign travel. We'll see. I always have at least wto back-up cards-just in case.
