Toilets in Athens

I understand that public toilets are few and far between in Athens (and necessarily very clean).

Can one pop into a cafe or restaurant and just buy a coffee in order to use the restroom (as in Italy or elsewhere)?

I have a pretty active bladder and consume usually large quantities of water when traveling to avoid dehydration.

Yes just buy something at a taverna or bar and the washroom is yours to enjoy.

Is it obvious what is a taverna or bar rather than a restaurant? Are there stand-alone coffee-shops?

On my first visit to Athens this summer I did a tour with a local who went over basic things all first time visitors to Athens should know and if I remember correctly he told us you don't even have to buy anything just ask politely and most establishments won't have a problem.
