Thoughts on Folegandros Island

Going to Greece late April/Early May. Planning a few days in Folagandros. Anyone out there who can give me some thoughts about things to do and not do. Probably stay like 3 nights and look at staying in Chora but would like to see the whole island. Thanks!

I can not really give you specific information on Folgeandros in spring, as I was there mid September, but the most important thing to note, is, that Greek Orthodox Easter will be on 2nd of May in 2027. This is usually when the islands become a bit more alive after winter, as many people go to the islands to visit their families, so you will be there with lot of locals, who are mostly in a very relaxed mood. Easter celebrations will be a big part of public live during this week.

We only had a short (and unplanned) 2 night stay on Folegandros quite a few years ago. In my opinion, along with Sikinos, it’s the most unspoiled island in the Cyclades. If you're looking for peace and quiet and authenticity it is an excellent choice. The ideal place to stay is Chora, which is pretty much the only village besides the port itself. We managed to find a small house with a kitchen there. We rented a scooter at the port, but it's not strictly necessary depending on what you plan to do, especially if you're more into hiking. There is a bus between the port and Chora.

You didn't mention whether this would just be one leg of a trip that includes other islands, or if you're planning to head there directly from Piraeus. There is now a daily Seajets ferry that runs through the Western Cyclades, including Folegandros, which takes just over 4 hours to get there (that didn't exist back when we went). There's also the traditional Dionysios Solomos ferry that runs 3 times a week, but that one takes over 7 hours. So, in my opinion, the main priority is to work out the ferry logistics to get there and back based on your overall itinerary, especially since, as blackdog mentioned, if you're there over May 1st weekend, it will be right in the middle of Easter. Also note that, Easter or not, there are no ferries running on May 1st. So don't plan any travel on that day.

Here is the island's official website in case you haven't seen it yet:
