I have to make a choice of an Athens city neighborhood to stay in. Thisio or PangratI? Which is closer to sites and is safe as well? Not that it should matter but I will be there mid-June.
Have you considered the Plaka area? Excellent area with hotels that have great views of the Acropolis and good restaurants.
Thisio is closer to the Acropolis and the Agora. It is on the metro which is handy for getting about.
Pangrati is slightly further from the centre but has more of a local neighbourhood feel and less tourists. The Olympic Stadium is the only real site. It’s quite a big area so exactly where you are looking is a consideration. If you are at the bottom of the hill, say around Plateia Proskopon, you can easily walk across the National Gardens to the centre. If you are higher up you might need a trolley.
Both areas are safe although as in any major city you’ll want to take sensible precautions.
We’ve stayed in Pangrati several times and it would be my choice. If it’s your first time in Athens though you might prefer to be more central.

I have also stayed in Pangrati and liked it, it's nice to get out of the tourist mob and breathe a little. But you will be walking long distances/taking the bus/metro to see almost all the major sights, so be aware. It was quite hot when we stayed there and we had somewhat wished we'd stayed more central so we could retreat to our hotel for an afternoon rest, but our flat in Pangrati was far enough (and uphill enough) that we didn't bother.
