Hi! I’m beginning my research on a possible trip to Greece early this fall and am overwhelmed by the options! I love fishing villages—Vernazza, Cassis, etc.—and am wondering what Greek destination might check that box. Also, am I right to think that sights on Crete are pretty spread out? It looks amazing, but seems like lots of travel time. I’m leaning toward Naxos or Milos or maybe Sifnos—and Athens, of course. Thanks for your thoughts!
With more than 200 inhabited Greek islands, the first question to ask is if you’re open to flying to an island and then maybe taking a ferry. Since it seems like you are, the next question is if you’re open to going to an island you’ve maybe never heard of and maybe cannot spell. Because there’s a difference between the siren song drawing us to “famous” places we’ve heard of before, and striking out on the road—not just less traveled—but maybe mostly unheard of.
Kefalonia, Symi, Folegandros, Karpathos and Lefkada are just a few.
I've been to Vernazza and for me the Vernazza of Greece is Hydra. Similarities include:
- on the water;
- not accessible by road / no traffic;
- small village (in terms of population) but lots of rooms, hotels and restaurants;
- great views from the hills;
- both have stone fortifications near the harbour;
- (and one negative), both getting a little over-touristed (although Vernazza is much worse than Hydra).
We really loved Hydra for being close to Athens, but a million miles away in terms of relaxation.
Hi! I totally get how overwhelming planning a trip to Greece can be—there are just so many beautiful options!
If you love fishing villages like Vernazza and Cassis, you might really enjoy the village of Naoussa on Paros. It has a classic Greek fishing harbor, whitewashed houses, colorful boats, and lots of charm. Sifnos also has some lovely, authentic villages like Kamares and Kastro that have a relaxed, local vibe.
Naxos is a great choice too—it’s bigger but still has that small-town feel in places like Apollonas and Halki, plus wonderful beaches and local food. Milos is quieter, with fishing villages like Klima and Mandrakia, famous for their colorful boathouses right on the water.
And yes, you’re right about Crete—it's an amazing island with so much to see, but the sights are definitely spread out. If you go there, renting a car is a good idea to make the most of your time.
Let me know if you want more details or have specific questions about any of the islands!
