Looking for a good place to stay in early May, in Syros, Ermopouli, maybe Vaporio district? 3 nights. In our 40’s, would love a balcony if possible, can be simple or a little fancy, walking distance to restaurants and bars.

It’s a matter of personal taste but personally I prefer the centre. The advantage is just being closer to everything. On the other hand Vaporia has more accommodation with balconies with views, and is nearer the beach.
If you decide on own then the Hermes is worth a look. It’s an old building but reasonably well done up and many of the rooms have good views.
The possibility you don’t mention is Ano Syros, which is our favourite. It’s a beautiful area with a couple of bars and restaurants. It’s a fairly easy walk down into town and taxis are cheap and plentiful to get backup if you don’t fancy walking at the end of the evening.
You say early May. Just checking you know 5th May is Easter Sunday in Greece? A lot of accommodation will already be booked and you certainly shouldn’t turn up without booking.
Syros is great and even if you don’t stay there Ano Syros is worth a visit. Have a great time.
