Stray animals in greece

Went to greece recently and quickly got sick after what I saw. Was in Athens and wasn't so bad in city but outside city is sickening. Stray cats everywhere in streets, out door restaurants , under parked cars. Filthy and sick looking. I heard that people are poisoning them. There are some make shift cat houses of crates and boxes in front of some homes and water bowls. I saw a cat with a large portion of skin missing on its head.

We went on a gondola ride up mount parnitha and on the way I saw a huge dog laying on side of road. I ask my sister who is in greece alot if it's a stray . She said unfortunately yes. Then I began to see more and more. There was a open lot area and there were at least 10 large dogs. When I went close I saw the expression on their faces . That look is branded in my brain for life. Sad, surrendered, desperate, threw in the towel on life look. I will never go back to the beutiful country of greece where my parents are from. I immediately went on line and began donating to people who are trying to educate the population about animal care and who are trying to help change. People there get mad if you say anything to them. They say " oh the cats are free here and happy". Lol not! Sickness and suffering from disease is not happiness. Most every cat had eye infection or something, discharge pouring out from eyes.

I wore my ear buds at night to drown out the screaming sound of cats fighting durning the night.
Never going there again. That was anything but a vacation.

Yeah, I am haunted by a dog on a very short chain near our house rental on Crete. I contacted an animal rescue organization to help that poor dog who just wanted some love. I am worried that if I return the dog will still be there and it will be difficult to enjoy my stay. The situation is quite grim, not just in Greece, but in many parts of Europe like Slovakia and Hungary. Humans can often be the worst animals.

The sole purpose for that dog on short chain is to be a watch dog. We are the worst of animals. Never going back but will never forget. I'll do what I can from home. So sad

You’ll never travel anywhere if you hate to see stray animals roaming around. Practically every country I’ve been to and probably most countries in general have strays. As an American, though, I’ve got to say that the Greeks and Italians treat their strays the best. Close second are the people of the Yucatán. When we first went, in 2006, the mount of stray dogs was disheartening. The way people treated them was worse. Fast forward to our second Yucatán trip, in 2016. Things changed a lot. Not as many strays and many people with their own dogs. Even the strays we saw were in much better health than ten years prior.

Please read my recent response in this form re stray animals ( too long to retype )

Yes it is an issue ! And no it is not like that in most Western European countries , it is worse in Greece

There are locals who do care and are trying , but animals are still not considered worthy of proper treatment by many still .

There is a shelter on Crete that now has 600 animals ! Run by a Greek man ( look up takis animal shelter in Crete in fb )

And technically it is illegal to tie dogs up like that - the animals often live a horrible life on short chains - no companionship - so it is good to report that - on Crete the police will call takis to come get them .
