My parents are planning a trip to Greece and their English is passable but not great. They are from Mexico. I’ve been to Greece and had no issues finding lots of people who spoke English. Will most people in the tourism industry speak basic Spanish too? If not, any tips for making it easier for my parents to navigate? They are not very seasoned travelers, and they’re not interested in a cruise.
Your parents will do just fine with passable English, as do millions of other tourists visiting Greece whose first language is not English.
If they also learn 4 or 5 Greek words (good morning, good night, thank you, hi, please), everything will be fine.
Let them start here:
English is the default language for all tourist interactions. As long as they speak enough to order in a restaurant etc then they’ll be fine. You will see tourists from all over the world getting by in English. I don’t think many people in Greece will speak Spanish.
