Does anyone know of a simple, mid-priced hotel or cabins by the ocean where we can just walk on the beach and watch the waves from our balcony? We don't want luxury and don't need a pool, just good food and village and ocean scenery. We're renting a car and visiting archaeological and historical spots on an 8 day loop early October, but I would love to have 2 days by the sea interspersed with my husband's educational itinerary.

Well, I can't speak from experience, but on October 1 we are checking into the Malvasia Hotel in Monemvasia. 90 EUR per night. From what I can see on their website, the views are spectacular. This is on the East coast of the Peloponnese. We plan on staying there 3 nights and exploring the southern Peloponnese.

Lots of options depending on where you are going.
The Messenia area has several nice villages like Methoni, Kroni, or Pylos and many other options.
Tolo near Nafplio isn't bad, lovely beach and smallish village.
Many, many other options, maybe look at a map of the Peloponnese and determine what areas you are interested in then come back for more specific recommendations on those areas.

We really enjoyed our stay in a small apartment at Vardia Hotel in Kardamyli. It's not on the beach but there is wonderful view of the ocean from the balcony. The hotel is very nice and free parking available. You can check out the photos on Booking.com. It's a bit of a walk up and downhill to get to and from the town/beach but if your knees are strong, it's worth it!

It would help a lot if you could give us your tentative itinerary, and let us know at what point you'd like to have this beach experience?? For example, are you trying to do a complete circuit of the the Pelops? Or are you concentrating on the eastern half?? For example:
• NEAR NAFPLIO -- if you want a place right on the sand, nearby, I have a good spot just up the road from Tolo Beach, at Kastraki ... https://www.booking.com/hotel/gr/porto-assini.html Tolo is SUCH a package-holiday "hive" with close-packed rows of hotels, it can look a bit deserted off-season. I've already given u a swell choice in Nafplio Old Town, but if you will be in the area longer, check this out.
• The FAR WEST -- I haven't heard that the Mani is much of a beach destination, never made it that far... but if you are in the PYLOS area, I have a my Secret Eden just 10 km N of there, almost the Only hotel at Gialova, a tiny village on a stunning beach ... http://www.zoeresort.com Hotel Zoe (website calls it a "resort" but it's not, just a great family-owned hotel) -- the front rooms, canopied, look over low palms to water... even 2 days is a magic interlude, and off-season it's within budget. This can be a base for visits to Messine, Nestor's Palace, and Navarino Bay & the wondrous wildlife refuge area nearby.
