Side trips from Delphi:

Hello:

We're trying to work out a draft itinerary for a couple of days around Delphi. Can anyone suggest any short side trips (by car) from Delphi that could last up to a few hours. We may stay in neighboring Itea a couple of nights before heading back to Athens. Any town, archaeological site, special restaurant, etc? We're open to most any suggestions for this specific region.

Thanks for your time!

There’s a fairly recently opened, very impressive and little visited Mycenaean site at Voudeni.

You could easily do this as a day trip from Itea, possibly stopping off at Nafpaktos which has a scenic little harbour and an impressive Venetian fort.

Have you considered, rather than two nights in Itea, driving back to Athens across the Rio - Antirio bridge? You could visit Voudeni on the way and then spend a night on the top of the Peloponnese. My choice would be Diakofto which has a spectacular rack and pinion railway up into the mountains to Kalavryta.

The seaside town of Galixidi. Very charming and with lots of restaurants. Certainly more charming than the town of Delphi, which isn't saying much...

The Byzantine monastery of Hosios Lukas is well worth the visit. It is a few miles off the highway between Delphi and Athens. It is like stepping into another time and place.
