Hello,
I thought my partner and I had figured things out, but I just ran across some info on other Greece threads on this site that have me second-guessing our rough plan. My partner and I will be arriving in Athens around 7:00 am the morning of Oct. 4 (Sunday) and returning to the US (Boston; home is near Portland, Maine) on Oct. 16 (Friday). Our first time to Greece, but otherwise seasoned travelers and active, I'm early 50s & he's late 60s.
Current rough plan:
Oct. 4 -- explore some of Athens after arrival, stowing luggage at hotel (or airport?) until we can check in
Oct. 5 -- rent car at Athens airport and drive to Meteora (possible Delphi stop along the way); have not decided which town to stay in, probably the one RS says is more charming, but would stay for 2 nights; planning to visit the Theoptera Cave while in the area
Oct. 7 -- drive to Napflio late in the afternoon (possibly as late as 5 pm) for an evening arrival, likely taking the E92 to E951 to 5 to 8 to E65 route for a change in scenery and not back-tracking to Athens
Oct. 9 -- drive to Athens, stopping at Epidavros along the way (and possibly Mycenae and/or Corinth?), probably arriving in Athens in the evening
Oct. 10-14 -- were considering spending these days on Hydra and Spetses or Poros, on the advice of a Greek travel website that uses its own proprietary AI program (I did not realize initially that the email correspondence was with AI and not a human at first, but it became obvious). The idea was to enjoy some low-key, relaxing time getting some of the Greek "island experience" without the driving and without a very long ferry.
Oct. 15 -- more Athens exploration
Oct. 16 -- early afternoon flight home
My questions:
Has anyone driven that route from Meteora to Napflio?
I have seen other references to doing Delphi-Meteora trip and Epidavros/Mycenae-Napflio as two separate trips, each originating from and returning to Athens. Are there any strong reasons NOT to link them into one long loop as we're considering?
While looking for other info in the RS forum tonight, I have seen some frequent Greece travelers give low marks to Hydra and Poros (can't recall if I have seen Spetses mentioned in what I read). Would we be better served in our pursuit of a few relaxed days on a Greek island by visiting Sifnos Oct. 10-15? Or even Kea? Checking Ferryhopper, it looks like Oct. 10 has two fast ferries to Sifnos (7:40 am and 9:00 am), and Oct. 14 has two fast ferries returning to Pireaus (13:35 and 16:05).
Pros and cons of having one day at the beginning and one day at the end to explore Athens (a Sunday and a Thursday)? Do we need another day at one end or the other? Or a full day in Athens between the road trip and the island portion?
Add another night to Napflio and trim a night from Sifnos (or whichever island)?
Thank you so much in advance!
